Rioting breaks out in Zambia after country's soccer loss to Senegal
September 4, 2005 LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) - Rioting broke out in Zambia's third-largest city after the country's 1-0 soccer loss to Senegal. The violence happened Saturday in the copper belt city of Kitwe, about 400 kilometres north of the capital, Lusaka, the Sunday Times of Zambia reported. The city has a significant population from the largely Muslim West African nation of Senegal. Zambia supporters broke down the gate of a mosque and torched a number of cars parked outside the building, the paper said. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. There were no reports of injuries. Police officials did not answer calls seeking comment on Sunday. Senegal took the African Group 1 lead with Saturday's win at nearby Chililabombwe. © The Canadian Press 2005
